Introducing the 2024 #BEACTIVE DAY Sustainability and Accessibility Guides!

This year, #BEACTIVE DAY is breaking new ground with campaign focuses on making physical activity more inclusive and sustainable. The aim is to engage more people with disabilities, by lowering barriers to physical activity and promoting healthy lifestyles. This approach is crucial for expanding the impact of the European Week of Sport (EWoS) and the #BEACTIVE DAY campaigns, by continuing our campaign’s move beyond 'one-size-fits-all'.

Commitment to Sustainable Practices

In addition to promoting accessibility, #BEACTIVE DAY 2024 is committed to increasing sustainable practices in its campaign events. This involves strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of the campaign, making it a dual effort towards inclusivity and ecological responsibility.

Developing Comprehensive Guides

Despite recent advancements, sustainability of and accessibility to physical activity still face room for improvement. To support this, the 2024 #BEACTIVE DAY project (co-funded by the European Union) has developed two comprehensive Guides: one on Sustainability and the other on Accessibility. These Guides aim to raise awareness, showcase best practices, and build capacity among campaign organisers.

Insights from the Campaign Workshop

At a recent campaign workshop in Riga, Gunta Anca, a disability expert from the Latvian Umbrella Body for Disability Organisations (SUSTENTO), and Luís Monteiro, a sustainability expert from the European Network of Outdoor Sports (ENOS), shared their insights and facilitated sessions with project partners. The workshop was further joined by Dāvis M. Daugavietis, member of the Latvian Parliament, who engaged with the group to shape the content and goals for this year’s campaign.

Availability and Translation of the Guides

As a result of this collaboration, the 2024 #BEACTIVE DAY Sustainability and Accessibility Guides are now available. These Guides have been co-written by experts and the project consortium and are available in several languages including Bulgarian, Czech, Dutch, English, German, Latvian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Slovenian.

The Sustainability Guide

A practical tool designed for fitness and physical activity stakeholders, it empowers them to lead environmental change through their campaign events, highlighting the urgent need to address contemporary environmental concerns. The Guide offers practical strategies for conserving resources and promoting eco-friendly practices, paving the way for sustainable event planning and implementation.

The Accessibility Guide

On the other hand, the Accessibility Guide exposes the barriers faced by people with disabilities in accessing physical activities. It provides practical solutions and strategies to enhance accessibility and inclusivity, promoting physical activity as a means to bridge differences and contribute to social cohesion. The Guide aims to inspire new standards of inclusion across the sector.

Partnership with MORLA MOVES

To further enhance accessibility, this year’s #BEACTIVE DAY campaign has partnered with MORLA MOVES. This innovative AI tool provides corrective exercise guidance, making it easier for people with disabilities to exercise and engage in physical activities. This partnership will significantly boost the digital aspect of the campaign, which is essential for increasing participation in physical activities.
